Also caught up in this story was Ivey’s accomplice, Cheung Yin Sun, who helped him beat Borgata out of a fortune.

Unlike Ivey, Sun, better known as “Kelly,” isn’t a famous poker player who’s used to be being in the limelight. Instead, she’s an heiress who got her gambling start by blowing $20 million of her inheritance on slot machines and table games. Sun’s gambling habit got so bad that she was eventually jailed for not repaying a $93,000 marker.

“I was in jail for three weeks,” she said in a New York Times piece. “Women attacked me, and the guards wouldn’t let me wear my own underwear. I lost 25 pounds in jail and didn’t get out until a relative flew here with $100,000 for the casino. I decided that one day I would get back the money by playing at MGM properties.”

Out for revenge, Kelly bought souvenir playing decks from casinos and began examining the card backs. After thousands of hours spent looking at card backs, she found decks that had manufacturing flaws. Although the imperfections were as small as 1/32 of an inch, Sun trained herself to spot them.

She then gathered a team that hit casinos, such as the Aria, where they won $1.1 million by edge sorting in mini baccarat. Eventually, Sun linked up with Ivey, and the pair made $10.1 million at Borgata, and another $12 million at Crockfords (London). Both casinos sued Ivey and Sun, winning the lawsuits.

Nevertheless, Kelly has won in so many casinos around the world that even with being forced to return the Borgata/Crockfords money, she has become a world-renowned advantage player.
