Plans for the upcoming Boston Harbor casino resort in Everett, Massachusetts have always included the Wynn name. But company executives are now considering dropping the name following former CEO Steve Wynn’s sexual harassment troubles.

“We are absolutely considering a rebranding of the project and we’ll have an announcement on that at a later date,” said Wynn Boston Harbor President Robert DeSalvio, who spoke at a Massachusetts Gaming Commission hearing yesterday. “It’s under active consideration right now.”

Company Has Already Renamed Websites

The Boston Herald reports that the casino company has already begun the process of renaming various websites under the domain registry of Wynn Resorts Holding. At least 9 company-owned websites now carry the Encore brand, including encorebostonresort.com, encorebostonharborcasino.com, and encorebostonjobs.com.

Company spokesman Greg John didn’t answer on whether they’re thinking of changing the entire company name to Encore.

“Whenever we open a new resort,” said John, “it is both policy and a good business practice to secure the domain names of all our branded business units.”

What Is Encore?

Encore is the sister hotel located next to Wynn’s flagship casino in Las Vegas. It’s also one of the few brands the company owns that doesn’t bear the Wynn name. Therefore, it seems like a good candidate to replace many of the disgraced ex-CEO’s branded property names.

However, it’s worth noting that Wynn Resorts is still making a slow transition towards renaming its holdings. That said, nothing is official right now on the Boston Harbor resort nor the company as a whole.

Pressure Coming from State Politicians

Massachusetts politicians have petitioned the business to remove Steve Wynn’s name from the Boston Harbor casino. This includes everybody from Gov. Charlie Baker to Attorney General Maura Healey.

Wynn Resort executives, meanwhile, have pushed back on the requests. They’re worried that changing everything so quickly, including the company’s iconic logo, could have disastrous consequences for the company.

“I think it’s a fairly significant step and probably a wise move,” said Clyde Barrow, a casino expert and professor at the University of Texas. “The Wynn company will persist with or without his name.”

Steve Wynn has been battling rape allegations since January. Elaine Wynn, his ex-wife, told a Las Vegas courtroom that she reported the matter to Wynn Resorts General Counsel Kim Sinatra in 2009. Sinatra denies the claims.
