Spanish casinos have recently reported that some of their slot machines have been scammed through the use of counterfeit €5 bills.

According to the Spanish news outlet El Mundo, Madrid police have arrested several Chinese nationals for using altered €5 bills while playing slot machines.

They reportedly put the €5 notes into machines to fool the games into delivering €50 payouts.

How the Scammers Pulled Off This Slots Cheat

The Chinese nationals pulled off their scam by cutting €5 bills in half, then taping the halves together so that there was a 2-3 millimeter gap in between them. They then inserted the doctored money into the machine, which would spit the bills back out and refuse to accept them.

But when the perpetrators kept putting the altered notes into the machine again and again, the games would eventually change the account balance to €50. The cheaters could then cash out the money and make a €45 profit each time.

Madrid Police Looking for More Slots Scammers

Madrid authorities aren’t convinced that they’ve rounded up everybody in connection with the plot. Therefore, they’ve advised casinos around the area to continue watching for the counterfeit bills scam.

Details are scarce on whether this hoax works on a specific model of slot machine, or if it’s a universally successful scam. Regardless, Spanish casinos are on high alert as they look for any other potential cheating.

It’s also unclear how Madrid police were able to apprehend the Chinese nationals who were using this con. The likely answer is that the casino noticed that they were losing lots of money through slots and reviewed surveillance to find that certain gamblers were using fake bills to cheat machines’ balances.
