Casino resort operator Las Vegas Sands is doing everything in their power to land one of Japan’s limited casino resort licenses. And this includes sending soccer legend David Beckham to speak with Japanese lawmakers.

The Land of the Rising Sun is seen as the next big market in casino gaming, thanks to their wealth and population. And the Sands Corp. promises to build an ultra-modern “integrated resort” to capitalize on this market.

Sands Not the Only Company Eyeing Japan

If it seems like Las Vegas Sands is trying extra hard to gain a foothold in Japan, it’s for good reason.

After all, MGM International and Wynn Resorts are also doing their best to gain one of the few available licenses. USA News reports that Tokyo, Osaka and Yokohama are three prospective cities that might hold licensing.

Beckham’s role was to provide charm on Sands’ behalf during a Tokyo news conference. He spoke of his love for sea urchin egg, or “uni” sushi to those in attendance.

Japan also Looking for Big Stadiums

In addition to their desire for major casino resorts, Japan is also interested in major arenas that could bring in more tourism.

Tim Leiweke, CEO of Oak View Group and former president of AEG, which owns Staples Center, said that it would take billions to build these stadiums. However, he also believes that the payoff would be worth it in the long run.

Leiweke said that he hopes to create a Japanese arena that would be similar to Madison Square Gardens. The finished product could host NBA games and other major international sporting events.

“The NBA needs that kind of facilities to make that kind of trip worth it,” Leiweke explained.

As for the casino resorts, they’re expected to be built around 2022 or 2023. However, the licenses must be issued before anything serious begins.
