Last week, somebody stole HK$48 million (US$6.1 million) worth of chips from a casino VIP room in the Novos Aterros do Porto Exterior (NAPE) area.

Now, the Judiciary Police (PJ) believe that a 49-year-old dealer named “Lei” orchestrated the theft. The Macau Daily Times also reports that a 70-year-old security guard named “Ho” was involved too.

How the Crime Happened

Lei was working an empty VIP room at 7am on January 16. He took this chance to steal all the chips from his table and leave the property.

A female dealer was the only other person in the VIP room. Some reports suggest that Lei threatened her with a knife to gain her compliance. But the police have denied that any weapon was used in the theft.

Police Catch Lei and Ho

The PJ tracked Lei’s motorcycle to the Rua da Praia do Manduco district at 6 p.m. on January 18. They eventually found Lei and Ho meeting at a garden in the Taipa district.

Authorities discovered HK$40,000 in casino chips in Lei’s possession. They found another HK$22,000 in Ho’s possession.

Lei admitted that he took part in the casino robbery, but refused to say where the chips were. Lei also said that he used the chips to settle a personal gambling debt. Ho denied taking part in the theft.

The PJ have since charged both suspects with robbery and taken them to the Prosecutions Office. They are also further investigating the crime to see if anybody else is involved in the matter.

As of now, the PJ have yet to recover the casino chips. This problem is further compounded by the fact that the chips are unmarked and could be exchanged for cash.

But with two suspects in custody, there’s a good chance that they can eventually find the whereabouts of the missing casino chips.
